Our news: Monday, March 7, 2022, Kyiv, day twelve
Today turned out to be one of the most difficult days since the beginning of the war. Early in the morning we were awakened by the sound of explosions and the roar of aircraft. I very quickly ran to Roxy's cage and opened it. Roxy immediately woke up and left the cage. I didn't expect her to do it so quickly. Usually in the morning she is very slow, especially since it was dark. I turned on the flashlight as there was no light. Roxy snuggled up to me and we went to the sofa. I calmed her down, stroked her, but she shuddered a lot.
I took an English Bible with me. Recently, many of you have been writing passages from the Bible to me, and I decided to restore the text in my memory. I brought this Bible from Australia, from my beloved Sydney. I was given it as a gift in one of the Catholic churches where I volunteered while studying at UNSW Australia. I then lived on the Catholic campus of the university and once every two weeks we went to church, where we distributed food to the poor, and were also at the service. Yes, I’m a Roman Catholic. I was once lucky to receive a blessing from Pope John Paul II at Mass in the Vatican. He touched me. Maybe that's why I'm so lucky.
During today's terrible shelling, to drown out the noise of the explosions, I just read the Bible out loud. This distracted Roxy and it helped her. Three hours later, the shelling ended and I was able to feed her porridge. I also gave her a piece of her favorite marshmallow. I give it to her very rarely, but today was exactly the day to distract her with something tasty, a delicacy from a past happy life. Look at this photo. Twelve days ago this happy child had everything. You need to appreciate every moment.
The situation in Kyiv:
It has become more complex and dangerous. Today we were very surprised by the news that after the “successful” negotiations between Macron and Putin, Russia opened a humanitarian corridor for the residents of Kyiv.
However ... civilians in Kyiv will only be able to leave for Belarus, and from there to ... Russia. We cannot travel to the unoccupied part of Ukraine. This is terrible cynicism and it looks like the Nazis took Jews to Poland and Germany ... to concentration camps. I see that Macron is not good at negotiations with Putin.
Everyone is afraid to go to Auschwitz. We stay. However, I no longer plan to leave Kyiv in the near future. It became very dangerous to leave. Today I saw a video of a car column of civilians being shot down, and these are dozens of cars. We are preparing to go through the horrors of Stalingrad or Leningrad. Who knows knows history of WW2, then he must remember the hundreds of thousands of dead residents of these cities.
On Roxy's condition: My princess sat next to me all day today and even fell asleep on my lap. I just woke her up and put her in her cage. She doesn't want me to leave. I sit next to her cage and type this text.
About my condition: After yesterday's improvement and cheerfulness, today my condition has not become better. Twice of this day my body temperature rose, but I managed and now everything is fine. I don't plan to sleep tonight and will be next to Roxy. I moved her cage to the corridor, where there are no windows.
My apartment is a big mess right now. I have to be ready to leave the premises quickly. I have prepared everything and will guard the dream of my peach girl.
Regarding the problem with the parcel:
I understand everything and I am very grateful that Ola made this heroic voyage. I’m a bit disappointed that I have given hope to parrot owners who have already run out of food. My parrots have no problems with food.
Once again I ask you not to give anything to unfamiliar volunteers at the border. Everything must be transferred through large international organizations or transferred to people you know. And you need to take into account the chaos that is now in Ukraine.
So far I have everything and if you want to help me in the future when I need help with moving to a safe place, then it is better for me to transfer money to a my card or pay for tickets, housing, cages for my parrots or something else. If you want you can only collect this money for now. However, I have already said that I am not used to someone paying for me. But now everything has changed and our happy life is shattered. I’m so strong and can start over.
Now for me the most important thing is to save my family and wonderful birds. I am very grateful to you for your support and prayers. This gives a lot of energy. It is a pity that I can only now enjoy your wishes and advice.
Just please do not write me in personal comments that I should give Roxy more fresh herbs and fruits It's been 12 days and I don't have anything fresh in my house. But Roxy's nutrition is still balanced. There is food, some fruits and vegetables. I give her some nuts and even today she got marshmallows, which she loves very much. I even have a video of her elegantly eating marshmallows. I love everyone very much. You have become family to me. XoXo
God bless you and Roxy. I pray for you both hourly Sergii…..when you talk about “being prepared to escape with your parrots“…are you saying with your African Grey as well? Does that mean your father and sister are still in Ukraine and haven’t left either? Ill pray fir them as well. Oh Sergii, please be safe. I’ve shared this site along with Ola’s Donation Page to all my Facebook friends in hopes that we can spread your story and hopefully get more donations for the feathered babies and people of Ukraine. Would hope you make it to the United States one day and we could meet you in person. With love and prayers, Sherri & Penelope
I would say you are very lucky if you have been touched by the pope. I hope someday you can leave. I will pray you can. Roxy is lucky to have you
Sergii, I am praying for you and Roxy and all Ukrainians. You are good parrot daddy! Roxy is lucky she has you! I have a Goffins Cockatoo named Merlin. My great grandma was born in Odessa and I never knew exactly where Odessa was until Russia attacked Ukraine. Stay strong. 🙏
